Do you ever wonder if you’re making the right decision or the best decision you could make?
My friend’s husband had died a year and a half ago after a long and happy marriage. She confided in me. “Now that I’m alone, there’s a number of business decisions and then decisions on the house I have to make by myself. Sometimes I wonder if I’m making the right one.”
“I understand how you feel. I feel that way too sometimes. I find it challenging sometimes to make decisions by myself now too. I like the idea that God will give us wisdom for every decision we make.
A verse comes to mind that says God will help us to make the best decision.” I shared with her as we talked on the phone. “I am the Lord, your God who teaches you what’s best for you, who directs you in the way you should go.” Isaiah 48:17 (NIV)
Also, I like the verse that says, whether you turn to the right or the left, you’ll hear a voice behind you saying, ‘This is the way, walk in it.” Isaiah 30:21 (NIV) This reassures me that God will speak to me if I’m going the wrong way.
When I had to buy a used car it was important to me not to be deceived and get a car that would break down so when I went out to test drive a car, I’d pray that God would keep my foot from being caught in a trap of hidden danger.”
“The Lord will be your confidence, firm and strong and shall keep your foot from being caught in a trap or some hidden danger.” Proverbs 3:21 (NIV)
Life presents us with challenges that require us to make decisions over and over. How do we go about making decisions and manage the stress?
Many factors go in to making good decisions and there are a multitude of good strategies to make good decisions but for this post I’m going to keep it simple and share three tips that have helped me.
3 Tips to Help You Make Good Decisions
- Prayer. Ask God to give you wisdom. “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” James 1:5
-
Read the Bible. Look for principles and instruction. The stories are packed with wisdom and you’ll find books with lots of advice and practical wisdom such as Proverbs.
-
Seek wise counsel. When I had to purchase a used car, I had three men who had bought and sold cars or worked on them. I asked for their practical wisdom in what to look for and what to avoid. I also chose men who honored God so they would help me walk in integrity.
