He Created a Legacy of Beauty
“Mom, I know I am going to be leaving soon when I graduate from college. I have seen the way you light up whenever we give you flowers. I would like to create flower beds for you.” My son Alex and I stood by the lamp post in our front yard as we chatted.
He continued, “You could pick out the flowers you want but in addition to seasonal flowers, we can also plant perennials so they will come up year after year.” His excitement grew as we talked. I looked around. The trees had begun to bud and the soft green of early spring reassured us that winter had gone. It was indeed time to think about spring time planting.

Everyday Hero in a Safety Vest
What is going on? Oh, no, we’ve lost electricity. I wonder how long it will be off? I had tried the kitchen lights, then the bathroom lights and then the living room.
I had been procrastinating. I need to work on some of the tedious parts of getting my book ready for publication. After working hard all week as a guest (substitute) teacher, all I wanted to on a Saturday is relax. But I also wanted to get the book done.
Now, this could be another obstacle.
I wanted to go to the neighbors to find out if they had lost electricity. I jumped in the shower, got dressed and went outside.

Everyday Hero ~ An Act of Kindness
“I didn’t even think to bring in my umbrella. I don’t know how we’re going to get to the car without getting drenched.” I lamented to John, my ten-year-old grandson.
“The wind is blowing hard too.” He observed as we stood at the glass doors gazing at the pouring rain after church last Sunday. Additionally, water rushed down the street gutter. It would be impossible to get to the parking lot on the other side without getting your shoes soaking wet.
I opened the door and mentioned our dilemma to Darryl, one of our deacons, “Do you know if someone has an umbrella? I don’t know how we’re going to get to the car.”

Into the Jungle ~ A Tribute to My Dad, A Man of Courage
I can still see the picture in my mind of my dad seated on a “kapoi,” the carrier four Africans transported him on into the jungles of Africa. He did not have the stamina the Africans did to walk for three days. The sweat gathered under his helmet and ours as we swatted the never-ending flies.
Mom tucked several loaves of fresh-baked banana bread into his belongings because banana bread kept longer than most food items. I caught a whiff of the aroma and I looked forward to fresh slices of the tasty treat later.
