He Created a Legacy of Beauty

“Mom, I know I am going to be leaving soon when I graduate from college. I have seen the way you light up whenever we give you flowers. I would like to create flower beds for you.” My son Alex and I stood by the lamp post in our front yard as we chatted.

He continued, “You could pick out the flowers you want but in addition to seasonal flowers, we can also plant perennials so they will come up year after year.” His excitement grew as we talked. I looked around. The trees had begun to bud and the soft green of early spring reassured us that winter had gone. It was indeed time to think about spring time planting.

Each Kindness Matters and Changes Lives

“Hi Mrs. Gibson,” a couple of sixth grade girls waved at me as I walked down the hall. I had an assignment as a substitute teacher for 6th grade science.

“What are you guys doing? Are you having a party?” I noticed all the kids in the classroom over lunch.

“No, we’re part of the kindness squad.”

“Kindness squad? What is the kindness squad?”

“We do kind things. We have two groups. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, we do different kindness projects.” They pointed to the classroom.

“That sounds awesome! What kind of kind things do you do?”

Everyday Hero in a Safety Vest

What is going on? Oh, no, we’ve lost electricity. I wonder how long it will be off? I had tried the kitchen lights, then the bathroom lights and then the living room.

I had been procrastinating. I need to work on some of the tedious parts of getting my book ready for publication. After working hard all week as a guest (substitute) teacher, all I wanted to on a Saturday is relax. But I also wanted to get the book done.

Now, this could be another obstacle.

I wanted to go to the neighbors to find out if they had lost electricity. I jumped in the shower, got dressed and went outside.

What Four-Year-Old Children Have to Teach Us

I enjoy the contrast in my guest (substitute) teaching work. Yesterday I had challenging seventh-grade boys and today I had 4-year-olds at pre-K.

The little ones are a challenge to keep in a line to get down the hall but they are so cute and loving!

One of the things that fascinates me is they have not yet lost their creativity and imagination. They build with blocks and tear down their creations repeatedly to start over.

I participated in one little girl’s play acting today. When I questioned on her on a couple of points she looked up at me and commanded, “Pretend!” Her tone came across like “get with it!” 🙂

The True American Spirit

My car broke down over the weekend. My son-in-law, Carlos helped me fix it. He discovered my oil needed changing. While he worked on it, he sent me to Walmart to get oil and a filter.

The automotive section had closed. I stared at the myriad of choices in oil filters, confused about which one to buy. I had used the machines but I couldn’t find the number they recommended.

I spotted a man and his family who turned down my aisle. I reached out and asked if he knew how to figure it out. He didn’t know but his teenage son stepped up and pulled out his iPhone. He asked me the make, model and year of the car and began to search.

Everyday Hero ~ An Act of Kindness

“I didn’t even think to bring in my umbrella. I don’t know how we’re going to get to the car without getting drenched.” I lamented to John, my ten-year-old grandson.

“The wind is blowing hard too.” He observed as we stood at the glass doors gazing at the pouring rain after church last Sunday. Additionally, water rushed down the street gutter. It would be impossible to get to the parking lot on the other side without getting your shoes soaking wet.

I opened the door and mentioned our dilemma to Darryl, one of our deacons, “Do you know if someone has an umbrella? I don’t know how we’re going to get to the car.”

Hard Things Are Worth It

I’m enjoying hanging out at our charming Broadway Cafe. I am writing my stories and working on my book,”The Gift of Writing: 10 Ways to Share Your Heart.”

I’m drinking iced tea, caffeine free red rooibos, vanilla and almonds bits. Delicious!

I asked a young woman sitting behind me to take this photo. I found out she’s a camp counselor at New Life Ranch for the summer. She’s going to a university in Texas studying mechanical engineering. She wants to go overseas to help underdeveloped nations with their engineering issues. 16-5-28 Broadway Cafe writing with computer 13267795_10208834082027258_1310929940355884075_n

Into the Jungle ~ A Tribute to My Dad, A Man of Courage

I can still see the picture in my mind of my dad seated on a “kapoi,” the carrier four Africans transported him on into the jungles of Africa. He did not have the stamina the Africans did to walk for three days. The sweat gathered under his helmet and ours as we swatted the never-ending flies.

Mom tucked several loaves of fresh-baked banana bread into his belongings because banana bread kept longer than most food items. I caught a whiff of the aroma and I looked forward to fresh slices of the tasty treat later.
