He Created a Legacy of Beauty

“Mom, I know I am going to be leaving soon when I graduate from college. I have seen the way you light up whenever we give you flowers. I would like to create flower beds for you.” My son Alex and I stood by the lamp post in our front yard as we chatted.

He continued, “You could pick out the flowers you want but in addition to seasonal flowers, we can also plant perennials so they will come up year after year.” His excitement grew as we talked. I looked around. The trees had begun to bud and the soft green of early spring reassured us that winter had gone. It was indeed time to think about spring time planting.

Each Kindness Matters and Changes Lives

“Hi Mrs. Gibson,” a couple of sixth grade girls waved at me as I walked down the hall. I had an assignment as a substitute teacher for 6th grade science.

“What are you guys doing? Are you having a party?” I noticed all the kids in the classroom over lunch.

“No, we’re part of the kindness squad.”

“Kindness squad? What is the kindness squad?”

“We do kind things. We have two groups. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, we do different kindness projects.” They pointed to the classroom.

“That sounds awesome! What kind of kind things do you do?”

Everyday Hero ~ An Act of Kindness

“I didn’t even think to bring in my umbrella. I don’t know how we’re going to get to the car without getting drenched.” I lamented to John, my ten-year-old grandson.

“The wind is blowing hard too.” He observed as we stood at the glass doors gazing at the pouring rain after church last Sunday. Additionally, water rushed down the street gutter. It would be impossible to get to the parking lot on the other side without getting your shoes soaking wet.

I opened the door and mentioned our dilemma to Darryl, one of our deacons, “Do you know if someone has an umbrella? I don’t know how we’re going to get to the car.”

Harsh Words Wound ~ Kind Word Bring Healing

Today, I stopped at a fast food/small grocery in our small town. I chatted with a friend outside who highly recommended the grilled chicken salad with pineapple, blueberries and strawberries. So I ordered it and it lived up to her raving. Delicious!

The young woman who waited on me at the counter went out of her way with her thoughtfulness and consideration of me as a customer.

I make an effort to recognize good customer service so I thanked her and complimented her on her considerate ways. “Her eyes teared a little as she smiled, “Thank you for saying that to me.” A woman customer yelled at me earlier. You know sometimes it gets so hectic here and it’s difficult to keep up.”

Love Seeks to Encourage You

Something compelled me to go after the homeless man shuffling by our hotel. I hesitated because my sister had gone into the lobby and would not know.

I had worked with the homeless a few years back so they didn’t make me nervous. I learned that many of them were people who had lost their way and needed encouragement.

My sister and I were in downtown Philadelphia attending a quarterly meeting of a year-long program from the Publicity Summit where we learned how to approach major media with our projects and products.

Be Kind to Each Other ~ You’re Not Stupid

As a guest teacher, I hear kids calling each other “stupid.” I don’t like this and try to address when I can because it’s not true and it’s damaging to their sense of value and worth.

This is a broader cultural problem as well. We have a tendency to think making mistakes means you’re stupid.

Let’s face it, we all make dumb mistakes from time to time and sometimes daily. However, that does not make us “stupid” but simply means we’re imperfect humans. Most of us are intelligent people in varying measures who make mistakes and hopefully we learn from them.

Home Away From Home Created With Discipline and Grace

One Person Who Impacted My Life

When a friend asked this question on facebook, though many people profoundly impacted me throughout my life, the first person who came to mind is my dorm mother in Africa.

At times I felt alone and abandoned because my parents’ missionary responsibilities required them to leave my sister and I when we were little. When we grew older we went away to a mission boarding school for three months at a time and then we came home for a month.

Give Thanks For Small Acts of Kindness

Yesterday when I shopped in our local grocery store, right when I needed something. a sales clerk rounded the corner and asked, “Are you finding everything?”

I smiled, “You appeared at the right time because I’m actually looking for. . .” and I told her what I needed.

She immediately said, “Well this is over here. I’ll take you there,” Then she told me where the other item was. After I finished with the first one and walked into the main aisle, she came out to make sure I got to the right place for the second item.
