Reluctant Worker Finds Unexpected Blessings
I pulled the covers over my head this morning because I did not have a morning assignment. I did not want to get up and go to work! I’ve had a heavy workload recently between school and the thrift store and needed some rest.
I spent much of the morning doing chores and listening to verses about how God gives us strength and about the way the Lord comforts us.
Then I needed to get ready for an afternoon assignment at the high school. In my prayers, I called forth blessings for the day and prayed that God would direct his love through me and to me and accomplish His purposes.

Each Kindness Matters and Changes Lives
“Hi Mrs. Gibson,” a couple of sixth grade girls waved at me as I walked down the hall. I had an assignment as a substitute teacher for 6th grade science.
“What are you guys doing? Are you having a party?” I noticed all the kids in the classroom over lunch.
“No, we’re part of the kindness squad.”
“Kindness squad? What is the kindness squad?”
“We do kind things. We have two groups. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, we do different kindness projects.” They pointed to the classroom.
“That sounds awesome! What kind of kind things do you do?”

Does God Listen When You Whine?
“I miss my mommy!” She snuggled up to me to me on a bench at the pre-K playground.
“I put my arm around her as I empathized with her, “I understand you miss your mommy.”
“My Grandma came for lunch today,” she shared.
“Good, I’m glad you got to have lunch with your grandma.” I had an assignment as a substitute teacher at pre-K for the day. They invited the parents or grandparents to come have lunch with the children.
“I want to go home now. I miss my mommy.” She shared in a plaintive voice as she leaned her head against my shoulder.

How to Deal with an Embarrassing Situation
“My pants ripped.” I looked up to see a red face boy standing at my desk. At that moment I heard giggles and laughter from a few of the other students.
Tears welled up in the boy’s eyes. I tried to fill out the form to send him for help but I couldn’t understand him because of the tears.
I had an assignment as a guest (substitute) teacher for a 5th-grade classroom that day so I didn’t know his name. The word spread and as other students joined in the giggles, the more the tears came.

What Four-Year-Old Children Have to Teach Us
I enjoy the contrast in my guest (substitute) teaching work. Yesterday I had challenging seventh-grade boys and today I had 4-year-olds at pre-K.
The little ones are a challenge to keep in a line to get down the hall but they are so cute and loving!
One of the things that fascinates me is they have not yet lost their creativity and imagination. They build with blocks and tear down their creations repeatedly to start over.
I participated in one little girl’s play acting today. When I questioned on her on a couple of points she looked up at me and commanded, “Pretend!” Her tone came across like “get with it!” 🙂
