Rather Than Shame, Learn From Mistakes

“Are you sitting on the bench because you’re injured?”

I had recess duty for 5th and 6th grade during a guest (substitute) teaching assignment and spotted a boy sitting on the bench.

“No, I’m in trouble.” He shuffled his feet and bowed his head.

I could see the shame he felt so I said, “Well, the important thing is that you learn from your mistake. We don’t have to be ashamed of making mistakes.

We all make them and sometimes we make the same ones more than once but hopefully, we eventually learn not to make those mistakes. Whatever it is you did, learn from it and do better next time.”

Discomfort in Pursuing Your Dreams

Growth only comes when you allow yourself to be uncomfortable.

Once you achieve one goal and you’re comfortable, then it’s time to allow yourself to be uncomfortable as you press into the next challenge.

Regardless of your age, stretch yourself in pursuing your dreams and desires mentally, emotionally, spiritually and physically.

Growth isn’t fun or easy but it’s necessary for the next level of achievement. Athletes understand this principle and inspire us to do the same.

Strength to strength.

Glory to glory.

How to Turn Disaster Fears Into Faith

I don’t know about you but natural disasters such as flooding, earthquakes, tornadoes give me a heightened awareness of how helpless we are as humans.

This past weekend we had serious flooding in our area creating an emergency disaster situation for many. The incessant rain and thunder stirred all those feelings of vulnerability, fear and powerlessness. These normal feelings cause us to reach out to a power great than ourselves and for me the turbulence caused me to turn to God.flooding 1014336_10207904652243815_5668684268344604028_n

Into the Jungle ~ A Tribute to My Dad, A Man of Courage

I can still see the picture in my mind of my dad seated on a “kapoi,” the carrier four Africans transported him on into the jungles of Africa. He did not have the stamina the Africans did to walk for three days. The sweat gathered under his helmet and ours as we swatted the never-ending flies.

Mom tucked several loaves of fresh-baked banana bread into his belongings because banana bread kept longer than most food items. I caught a whiff of the aroma and I looked forward to fresh slices of the tasty treat later.
