“I can’t believe it!” I heard a young woman exclaim as she grabbed the glass Christmas tree sitting on the shelf. “This is exactly like the one I broke that belonged to Grandma!” She beamed.
I stood in the aisle at our local Goodwill store on New Year’s Day. I watched her reach down to pick up the glass Christmas tree. She turned to her young son and showed him the tree. Then she picked it up and cradled it in her arms like it was a long-lost treasure.
One of those times I felt especially alone in facing my challenges occurred yesterday. God surprised me with a reminder of His care for me.
For the whole day I had felt especially vulnerable and alone so I prayed for God to show me His care for me.
One of my errands that evening required a trip to the grocery store. As I headed down the yogurt aisle, I looked up to see a friend of mine smiling at me. He was with three young people and he came up to me and greeted me.
The most amazing thing happened this morning!
I caught a glimpse of the sunrise outside my window so I rushed to put on my clothes so I could go out and enjoy the beauty.
I had been listening to Psalms for early morning encouragement but I decided to turn off my electronic device and simply listen to the birds chirp and savor the creative formation of the clouds.
Suddenly, I became aware that God walked beside me. Wow, I’ve never experienced that before. Though I’ve felt Him many times and sensed His presence or Him speaking to me, I had never experienced Him walking with me. So unbelievably awesome!
Something compelled me to go after the homeless man shuffling by our hotel. I hesitated because my sister had gone into the lobby and would not know.
I had worked with the homeless a few years back so they didn’t make me nervous. I learned that many of them were people who had lost their way and needed encouragement.
My sister and I were downtown Philadelphia attending a quarterly meeting of a year long program from the Publicity Summit where we learned how to approach major media with our projects and products.
In worship, the word Majesty caught my attention.
He is the King of Kings,
Majesty enthroned on high.
He has time for me.
He cares about my practical needs.
He’s there for me.
He’s my Deliverer
This reminds me of a song I play for my grandsons, “He’s a great big God, a very busy God but He has time for me.” (Bullfrogs and Butterflies)
He created and rules the world
He will always be there for me.
“I will never leave you or forsake you.” Hebrews 13:5 (NKJV)
Today I felt totally stressed out. I have a great opportunity to speak to share my program, “Write Your Story NOW ~ Leave A Legacy Your Loved Ones Will Treasure.“ The speaking event is a good opportunity to educate, empower and equip others to write their stories.
I have a lot to do to get ready for it and many decisions to make which make me feel a lot of pressure because I want to do it right. In the midst of thinking all these issues through, I had a sudden craving for chocolate. I’m health conscious so I’ve purchased raw cocoa because of it’s superior health benefits and came up with my own variation of a raw chocolate recipe.
I saw a touching sight today. I always benefit from interacting with the young ones, (4 and 5 year olds) when it’s my turn to serve in my grandson’s Sunday School Class.
We have two little boys in the class from serious abuse backgrounds who have been adopted. They’re making progress with the love and support of their adoptive family.
Today, the moment the dad came to pick up the boys. One ran to him and the other one looked up with a shout of joy, exclaimed “Daddy!” as he ran to him. I looked at my friend, his dad, in time to see the tears spring to his eyes.
I can still see the picture in my mind of my dad seated on a “kapoi,” the carrier four Africans transported him on into the jungles of Africa. He did not have the stamina the Africans did to walk for three days. The sweat gathered under his helmet and ours as we swatted the never-ending flies.
Mom tucked several loaves of fresh-baked banana bread into his belongings because banana bread kept longer than most food items. I caught a whiff of the aroma and I looked forward to fresh slices of the tasty treat later.
When you feel weak, sad or lonely Someone has tenderhearted compassion and mercy for you.
This is not an ordinary someone but Someone who sits in high places and happens to be the Highest Ruler of the Universe.
Usually we think of a higher authority as someone we’d be intimidated by but not this Ruler.
When you feel weak and in need of strength, you can come to the Ruler of All and you can count on His tenderhearted compassion and mercy for you.
Others may let you down and disappoint you. He won’t. He will always be there for you. He is reliable.
Do you have the freedom to accept yourself and express your feelings of stress or distress?
Too many people and especially in our culture, it’s not considered acceptable to express feelings of deep distress or grief. The result of this is when we feel these feelings we often suppress them or think there is something wrong with us.
However David the Psalmist frequently referred to his distress or grief and anguish. By doing so, he frees us to be human. When things are not going well for example in the family, at work or some other distressing life situation, David frees us to express those feelings, if not publicly at least before the Lord.
